Summer Camps - Berwick Academy (2024)

Emergency Care Plans/Medications While at Camp

If your camper has a medical diagnosis of asthma, diabetes, a seizure disorder, or an allergy that requires emergency medications, we require a care plan in order for them to attend. Please email a care plan from their primary care provider to the camp nurse at campnurse@berwickacademy.org. If a care plan is not provided to the camp nurse by May 1, your camper will not be able to attend camp. If you register after May 1, we will need your emergency care plan within one week of registration.

If your child requires a daily prescribed medication, we also require a care plan in order for them to attend and the nurse to dispense medication. Please email a care plan from their primary care provider to the camp nurse at campnurse@berwickacademy.org. If a care plan is not provided to the camp nurse by May 1, your camper will not be able to attend. If you register after May 1, we will need your emergency care plan within one week of registration. Please note that medications must be in their original packaging when brought to camp.

No Nursing Support Outside of the Berwick Academy Campus

Please note that off site camps will not have a nurse on duty to dispense prescribed and over the counter medications (aside from EpiPens and inhalers). Please take this into consideration when choosing camp(s) for your child(ren). In addition, if a camp leaves the Berwick Academy campus for a portion of the day, a nurse will not be traveling with the group. There will be staff on site that are CPR certified.

General Behavioral

All participants are expected to follow general rules of behavior, including respecting themselves, others, the School property, equipment, and materials.

Berwick Academy does not tolerate behaviors that do not promote the best experience for all participants and staff. We expect that the following major rules will be consistently followed by all participants:

  • No fighting or physical violence
  • No bullying, teasing, or making fun of other participants
  • No inappropriate language
  • No endangering the health and safety of other participants or staff
  • No inflicting self-harm
  • No damaging or stealing property

Please Note: No refunds or proration of tuition will be issued for dismissals resulting from a behavioral issue or violation of auxiliary program rules.

With respect to all other behavior issues by any participant, the School will take appropriate action to address such behavior and will engage the guardian as necessary to ensure that the participant addresses the issue. The School reserves the right to dismiss any participant who consistently fails to respect themselves, others, the School property, equipment, and materials.

Inclement Weather

We do our best to remain open and follow an indoor schedule on rainy days. In the event of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or tornado, the campus will be closed. No refunds or tuition proration shall be issued in the event of such a closure. We will notify you if make-up days can be arranged.

Nut “Aware” Campus

We maintain a nut “aware” campus. We ask that you please leave peanut and tree nut containing foods and products off campus to help ensure our nut allergic community’s safety.

Sunscreen & Bug Spray on Site

Campers should pack their own labeled sunscreen and bug spray each day. In the event that they do not have it with them, we will provide Coppertone KIDS Sunscreen Continuous Spray SPF 50 and OFF! Family Care Insect & Mosquito Repellent. If your child cannot have these applied to their skin, please notify the camp nurse at campnurse@berwickacademy.org prior to the summer starting.

Sick Camper Protocol

Please keep your camper home if they have any symptoms of illness. If any camper develops symptoms of illness while at camp, they will be separated from others and be brought to the nurse’s office for evaluation. The nurse will reach out with further information and may require your camper to be picked up early. When a camper is sent home for symptoms of illness, you will work with the nurse to make a plan for the camper’s return following Maine CDC and DHHS guidelines.

Relevant Information About The Participant

It is essential that parent/guardians communicate and promptly disclose to Berwick Academy Summer Camps any details that may affect the camper’s experience at camp, including but not limited to, the participant’s learning styles, medical conditions, behavioral challenges, and emotional needs. Please report such information to Margot Harrington, Director of Auxiliary Programs, and notify the School of any changes throughout the camper’s time at Berwick Academy.

Reasonable Accommodations

Our summer camp environment requires campers to be comfortable and independent in a very active and social environment. Parents/guardians of prospective campers should contact the Director of Auxiliary Programs, Margot Harrington, before registering for camp to determine if the camps will meet their child’s needs and to request a reasonable accommodation. We will make reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable law. To request a reasonable accommodation, please contact Margot Harrington, Director of Auxiliary Programs, at mharrington@berwickacademy.org.

Toilet Training

All campers must be toilet-trained in order to attend camp and able to independently use the restroom. Pull-ups are not permitted. The Berwick Academy Summer Camp staff are aware that our youngest campers may have the occasional bathroom ‘accident.’ Camp directors handle this situation with sensitivity and care. We ask that all campers have a change of clothes on hand.
