In Hinduism, the concept of time is divided into four great Yugas. And so, there are 4 Yugas - Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. Each yuga that has passed represents a different age of the world. For example, the Satya Yuga was known as the Golden Age. Evident from the name, Satya Yuga was the age of truth and perfection, and it was during Satya Yuga that Dharma prevailed. Then came the Treta Yuga. It is said that during the Treta Yuga, Dharma, or righteousness, lost one leg, and there was a decrease in virtue and increase in vice. Then came the Dvapara Yuga and Dharma was now only standing on 2 legs instead of 4. In Dvapara, truth and righteousness continued to decline, and dishonesty and other negative traits start to gain ground. And today, we are living in Kali Yuga.

Kali Yuga is known as the ‘Dark age’. It is described as the age of conflicts, discord, and moral degradation and is named after the demon Kali. It is said that it is during the Kali Yuga that the most deterioration of values, ethics, and spirituality will take place.
In Kali Yuga, people are driven by material desires, forgetting the grounded human within them and function widely on deceit and hypocrisy. Spiritual practices are no more a part of people’s lives, and true knowledge is not something that people wish to gain.

Naimisaranyam, often referred to as Naimisharanya, is a unique and sacred village located in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, and is believed to be a liberated village, untouched by the negative influences of Kali Yuga. Naimisaranyam is very important to people in both spiritual and religious aspects and is considered an ancient and holy forest where sages and saints performed penance and great rituals. In fact, it is also said that no ‘Char Dham’ yatra is complete with a visit to Naimisaranyam.

There are so many myths, stories, and legends about the town and why it came to be known as the one where Kali Yuga won't easily enter. And one of the most famous stories is that of a sage. According to one legend, the sages approached Brahma, the creator, and asked for a place where they could meditate without interruptions and do their spiritual practices. So, Lord Brahma advised them to conduct a yagna and throw a Chakra from his abode. And then the place where the Chakra will land will be a sacred retreat, free from any worldly distractions, and have immense power. The chakra landed Naimisaranyam, making it the best spot for spiritual energies and it was so pure because of the repetitions of mantras and shlokas that Kali Yuga did not enter over there.
